This study was conducted at the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, University of São Paulo, USP, Bauru, SP, Brazil. Conflict of interest: non-existent occurs due to the coupling of the oral and nasal cavities, while issuing the oral voiced sounds, due to the velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD)1 which in turn, may occur after the primary correction of the cleft palate. A recent survey reported the presence VPD after primary palatoplasty in 24% of patients enrolled in a clinical type study2. In these patients, the communication between the oral and nasal cavities remained even after the completion of primary surgery for the correction of the lip and palate. Such surgeries aimed, beyond the closure of the cleft itself, to establish the correct function of the velopharyngeal mechanism for speech production. Traditionally, speech resonance is evaluated by a speech-language pathologist through the auditory perceptual assessment. Even though the literature INTRODUCTION

Relationship between perceptual ratings of nasality and nasometry in children/adolescents with cleft palate and/or velopharyngeal dysfunction.
BACKGROUND Nasometry has supplemented perceptual assessments of nasality, using speech stimuli, which are devoid of nasal consonants. However, such speech stimuli are not representative of conversational speech. A weak relationship has been found in previous studies between perceptual ratings of hypernasality and nasalance scores for passages containing nasal consonants. AIMS This study aimed...
متن کاملEffect of cochlear implantation on nasality in children.
Hypernasality is a commonly perceived characteristic of speech in deaf adults and children, but the mechanism of this abnormal nasal resonance is poorly understood. The impact of cochlear implantation on nasalance measures in children with severe auditory deprivation has not been previously reported. We conducted a study of nasality in 6 deaf children who had undergone cochlear implantation. Vo...
متن کاملObjective assessment of nasality in Flemish adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.
When characterizing the speech of a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), hypernasality is often mentioned. As few studies applied technically assisted evaluations of nasality in NF1 patients, the aim of the present study was to document the nasal resonance of adults with NF1 using nasometry. The nasometric data obtained from the NF1 patients were compared with the nasalance scores of a ...
متن کاملSpeech Outcome regarding Overall Intelligibility, Articulation, Resonance and Voice in Flemish Children a Year after Pharyngeal Flap Surgery
Objective: The main purpose of this study is to determine the treatment effectiveness of pharyngeal flap surgery by measuring speech outcome 1 year after surgery. The authors hypothesized that flap surgery is an effective technique for velopharyngeal inadequacy resulting in improved intelligibility, decreased hypernasality and nasalance scores and normal voice characteristics. Patients and Meth...
متن کاملNasalance in Cochlear Implantees
OBJECTIVES Speech intelligibility is severely affected in children with congenital profound hearing loss. Hypernasality is a problem commonly encountered in their speech. Auditory information received from cochlear implants is expected to be far superior to that from hearing aids. Our study aimed at comparing the percentages of nasality in the speech of the cochlear implantees with hearing aid ...
